A Buffet of Trailers from Gamescom 2024!

Starting in 2009, Gamescom has grown to be the world’s largest gaming event, hosting over 300,000 people yearly at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Along with attendance by our very own Alienware (highlighted in this article, here) there was an abundance of game announcements, journalist interviews, and in-person demos to be had, and if you didn’t get the chance to fly over to Germany yourself, here’s a curated sampling of some of the trailers at this year’s Gamescom, so dig in!

Masters of Albion

Revealed by industry legend Peter Molyneux, this is a god sim game where the monsters come out to play at night! It’s enticing to see a sim with a strong narrative, and the art design looks vivid, detailed, and whimsical.

Final Fantasy XVI

Voice actor Stewart Clarke might have let the cat out of the bag hinting that something would happen at Gamescom, but players were still excited when Square Enix announced a September 17 release date for Deliverance, the first fully-fledged action RPG in the mainline series.

Infinity Nikki

Could I tell what the gameplay might be like with the trailer? Not really! But it was catchy, adorable, and gorgeous. Infinity Nikki is a console follow-up to the Chinese dress-up mobile games with a mix of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild elements as ex-Nintendo BOTW director Kentaro Tominaga is the executive producer.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII

Firaxis announced Civilization VII is due to be released on February 11th, 2025.  With new additions like Tribe and Plague systems, an enhanced combat system, and the return of World Congress. As a twist, you can choose your leader separately from your civilization.

Goat Simulator Remastered

Opening with a trailer missing the game’s signature mischief causing-animal, Goat Simulator Remastered kept the crowd guessing as they took a peek into the “Remasters Ward.”  They poked fun at a few industry tropes and memes before revealing the truly devious star of the game. (If there’s only one trailer you watch let it be this one, my actual-laugh-out-loud count was 6.)

Dying Light: The Beast

Dying Light: The Beast is a 20-hour standalone adventure following Kyle Crane, the Dying Light series' first protagonist. Gamers last saw him in 2016 in Dying Light: The Following story DLC which put him in a precarious position and left players wondering which end was cannon for the franchise. Almost 10 years later it seems like players are finally going to get some answers!

King of Meat

King of Meat looks like a chaotic good time! In this co-op game players will be able to create the dungeons that others will be traversing through on this painful game show. What’s better than creating a dungeon full of obstacles of death? Making your friends compete in it, of course!

Mafia: The Old Country

Experience the origin of organized crime! This trailer didn’t give us much to go off of, but it looks to be a prequel to the popular franchise.

[REDACTED]

Players will find themselves locked down in The Callisto Protocol’s Black Iron Prison. Not only will you have to fight your way through zombie guards and inmates, but it’s also a battle between your fellow humans to the last escape pod. The trailer was presented in a fun, yet gorey, comic book style that compliments the art style of the game. While the game has a different art style and vibe than Calisto Protocol, it still delivers when it comes to themes of darkness and gore.

Dune: Awakening

You can harvest blood from your enemies? Sign me up! Coming in early 2025 to PC and later to Xbox and PlayStation, Dune: Awakening starts you off as a nameless prisoner and throws you into the unforgiving world of Arrakis where you’re left alone to be hunted by sandworms and ravaged by the unforgiving planet. Although there’s a suspicious lack of sand-walking (no wonder the sandworms can find you) this looks like a fun way to experience Dune content while you’re waiting for the next movie.

FragPunk

Bad Guitar Studio describes FragPunk as a unique shard card system designed to bend the rules of FPS combat. Bad Guitar says that no two rounds of FragPunk are ever the same, with the 70+ Shard Cards creating new and unique combinations to amplify your jump height, reverse the roles of attackers and defenders, engulf your bullets in flame, and even resurrect you and your team. It looks like an interesting take on the genre. Will the added unpredictability spice up an FPS the right amount, or will it make it too hard to master, we might just find out during a beta in October!

Batman: Arkham Shadow

In its first gameplay trailer, Batman: Arkham Shadow looks surprisingly close to the combo-heavy gameplay of the original Arkham games. I’ll never tire of enjoying a good grappling hook mechanic in a game, so bring it on! The VR spin-off is coming 22nd October 2025.

That’s not even everything! There were plenty more juicy trailers and announcements but with content this filling we would be here all day, and as much as we would like to we can't take up residency in a buffet. What are you most excited about?

FFXVI looks a lot more interesting than I expected. I also liked Inifinity Nikki. I just hope it gets better reception that Genshin impact initially did, considering most of the early 'criticism' wasn't even about the gameplay.

Linux + AMD = ♡

I can't tell what Infinity Nikki is meant to be from the trailer but it looks like the most interesting thing here.

Donkey Brain

I'm pretty sure Masters of Albion is a Fable spin-off. Albion is the name of the land you're in and I think that little towns name, Oakridge, is one of the starting areas in at least one of the Fable games. It's been a long time since I played any of them and I only played the first two, so I could be misremembering stuff, but it sounds very familiar.

Infinity Nikki looks interesting, too. I'm not sure what's going on there, but it looked fun!

Infinity nikki looks interesting and fun! Also want to give Masters of Albion a try.
